You’ve once heard me sing the praises of Nova Twins, both at their SXSW 2022 performance in Austin and their follow-up concert at Baby’s All Right in New York when in April. I’m running out of superlatives to requite this wreath the tribute they deserve.
Sunday’s show at the Bowery Ballroom was the last U.S. show on the current tour. The start time was unquestionably moved up from 8pm to 3pm, to unbend a transpiration in the Nova Twins’ travel schedule — they needed to jet when to London to participate and perform at the the Mercury Awards show, since their Supernova tome was one of ten nominees for Best New Tome this year. At the Mercury Awards, they performed their monster song, Antagonist, surpassing a gussied-up prod seated at trappy tables with tuxedoed wait staff. A bit of an upgrade from us shlubs at the Bowery Ballroom.
The Nova Twins showed up an hour surpassing show time to sign autographs, sell merch, and do a meet’n’greet with those of us who arrived early. As usual, the two demure stars, Amy Love and Georgia South, couldn’t have been sweeter. They are tiny little things, cute as buttons, with trappy cheeri-o British accents. They were polite, gracious, and well-pleased of everybody who came out to meet with them.
On stage, of course, they kicked ass, made a ton of noise, strutted around, worthier than life, as the foul-mouthed, nasty, power-packed bitches they are when they perform. It was flipside unconfined fucking show.
Amy Love is lead vocalist and guitarist. Georgia South plays a killer bass. They are backed by Tim Nugent, who beats the crap out of his pulsate kit in perfect rhythm with the girls’ power chords and rap-style lyrics. Their overall style is a succulent tousle of Beyoncé attitude, AC/DC noise levels, and Insane Clown Posse madness. It’s a terrific blend.
Tonight’s show capped off the U.S. portion of the tour to promote their 2022 tome Supernova, which features the single, Choose Your Fighter, which they played as their encore. But withal the way, their set featured a slew of killer songs they’ve written over the past few years, including Antagonist, Cleopatra, Taxi, Puzzles, and others. You can see some short clips from their performance here.
Nova Twins was supported by Gully Boys, a wreath from Minneapolis who performed as openers. I thought they played a unconfined set. Listen here to Neopet Graveyard, a unconfined song which I think is representative of their sound.
